Going somewhere? Your computer got fried? Got a problem that needs you to step away from the game for a while?

Tell us here!

fandomsmashmods: (Default)
What style of game is this?

Fandom Smash uses action format in the main comm and prose format in the logs comm. This is to keep the community organized and consistent (for the ease of both mods and players) and we ask that you don't mix these two -- keep action in the main comm, prose in the logs comm.

If you don't know what action/prose are, look here for an example.

Fandom Smash is also a community-based RP. While you can post things in your private journal (and are encouraged to, in the case of stuff that needs to be age-locked), most RPing will be done in the community itself.

So what is this about?

Simply put? For some reason, characters are being pulled into the city known as the Nexus. No one is sure how or why, nor how to get back. They're stuck here for the time being.

What's the "Nexus?"

It's a city made by the first inhabitants to this world. It's fairly large, and has pretty much everything you can think of in it.

Status about its portal will be added when it becomes available.

So what's this about building the game?

Fandom Smash is a game that changes based on player actions, and the consequences of these actions. This means that a lot of the events involve "day to day" life. But with the sheer mix of people around, even that is far from dull. There is an overall plot, but how it works and the consequences of it vary based on player reactions. For instance, Megaman X assisted in a 'prison break' of political prisoners, and since he was seen to be doing this, he is a specifically wanted man in the Empire.

The Nexus itself is also based off what players do and some businesses are made by players.

Wait, player-made businesses? Does that mean there's money?

Yes! As said in the rules, there is a currency system in play. However, since it's assumed to be handwaved, players can do what they wish -- include starting businesses! The success or failure of these businesses is entirely up to the player making them. All we ask is that, in the case of making a business, you post it in the business post so we can keep track of it!

So can I leave the Nexus?

Absolutely, though there's not much reason to do so right now. The Nexus itself and the immediate nearby area is surrounded by miles upon miles of wilderness in either direction, and even past that wilderness on all sides are Empire checkpoints that are currently impassable. You're more than welcome to play around in the forests, of course, but the Empire aren't letting you past just yet.

Of course, plot events will allow you to explore beyond this, assuming you sign up for them.

Yes. Since most main plot events are important, they require sign ups so that they can be tailored to the number of characters and their strengths to make a more "personal" plot. Anyone can sign up and everyone who signs up is given a place, but it's not a "drop in drop out" thing like mini plots or player made plots.

Okay, enough about the Nexus. What about my powers?

They remain as they are. While we reserve the right to limit certain powers if absolutely necessary, that has yet to be used at all and we do our absolute best never to use it. So on acceptance, your powers stay as they are, unmodified unless by your choice. This includes any sicknesses and diseases.

For instance, if you could fly before coming into the Nexus, you can still fly, but if you couldn't, you can't suddenly fly.

However, remember that the world changes as players come in. The Force is now a regular part of the Nexus, so even characters not from Star Wars might be able to learn how to use it, if you wanted them to. We even have a Jedi Master or two floating around that could teach them!

What about NPCs?

They're brought in the same as characters, just without a player to play them. This means that the player characters aren't the only ones to exist -- there will definitely be other people at restaurants, running businesses, and such!

What about my weapons/armor/items?

If they were on your character at the time, then they came with the character. For important things like Gundams, they can be assumed to have been dragged in as well. Other than that, however, unless the character requires them to live, if they weren't on them or the character wasn't in them when they popped into the Nexus, they don't have them. If it's something small, they can find it randomly sometime in the Nexus, but if it's not small, you'd need to talk to a mod about regaining it.

What about player characters?

Player Characters, or PCs, are defined as characters whose history is set in stone (or at least has varying paths set in stone), but whose appearance, abilities, and/or personality are defined by the character. Examples of PCs are Commander Shepard from Mass Effect, Revan from Knights of the Old Republic, and the Warden from Dragon Age: Origins.

PCs are perfectly fine and you are more than welcome to app them, but be aware that their apps will be judged more critically than other apps.

What about things like Digimon and Pokemon?

That depends on the specific one, actually.

We would technically accept either a Pokemon character (such as Ash, Red, Gold) or a Pokemon as a character (such as Zoroark, Mightyena, or Lucario). Pokemon Trainers may have the six Pokemon they had on them when pulled into the Nexus, but may not catch any Mun-Played Wild Pokemon. None of these six, however, may not be Legendaries, for sake of fairness.

Like with Pokemon, we are willing to accept Digimon characters (Tai, Matt, TK) or Digimon as characters (Agumon, Angemon, Myotismon). In the latter case, they are not required to be the specific version seen in one of the media (Tai's Agumon, Adventure01 Myotismon), but they must have enough to make them starkly different from said media version -- IE, they must be a unique character. If you're apping a Destend/Tamer, you may also app for their Digimon as well if you wish -- in that case, you must include the Digimon character in your application as well.

Note that apps for Digimon-as-characters and Pokemon-as-characters, being similar to apps for Player Characters, will be judged more critically.

What about Summons?

That depends entirely on how the summoning is performed. If the Summon is drawn from the character themselves, then they would be allowed. If the Summon is called from another place, however (like Sheena's Summons from Tales of Symphona), then they would no longer be allowed -- those creatures don't exist in the Nexus.

I have another question!

Post it! We've certainly missed something and if there's anything we can answer, let us know!

Rules

(ONE)
Please make sure the character you're applying for isn't already taken. There are monthly activity checks so the Taken List is very accurate! It's your friend!

(TWO)
We're a friendly community and try to keep this place fun. IC drama =/= OOC drama, and we don't tolerate OOC drama. If you have a problem you can't resolve peacefully, come to the mods. They'll gladly help out with it.

(THREE)
Some characters, such as Spider-Man, have multiple different versions. This can be very confusing, and therefore, we only allow two versions of any character in the game. This means that if we have a Comic Spider-Man and a Movie Spider-Man, a game Spider-Man would be rejected.

This, however, does not apply to characters who aren't the same one -- for instance, Dick Greyson and Jason Todd would be considered different characters, and would not count as having two "Robins" in-game.

If you're unsure about your character, talk to a Mod.

(FOUR)
Godmoding and power-playing are not accepted at all. No excuses.

(FIVE)
While the Nexus seems to make many things appear, and in some cases things can be made by the people within it if they have the skills to build or invent it, it generally cannot manage to create either life or complex machinery.

To clarify: things can and will appear or be scavenged, from a character's home or not, so long as they are simple things and not other people, complex inventions or machinery, etc. Anything else must be built by hand by the characters -- no matter who they are or what powers they have, no character can simply "will" things into being.

(SIX)
Every character, on being accepted, gets a tag with their name. Please, please use these tags! They're very important to keeping track.

(SEVEN)
At the end of every month, Activity Check goes up. If you fail Activity Check, you're removed from the game. As AC is simply replying with the characters you have and want to keep, it's fairly simple and you will not be added back simply because you missed posting in AC. You may not post for someone else in ACs -- however, you are allowed to post to the Hiatus post for them if they're unable to do so themselves.

You are always welcome to reapp -- and even reuse your old app -- if you wish.

(EIGHT)
While methods of contact are optional, we generally need at least one way of contacting you. If you don't provide one, then the Mods take no responsibility if something happens or you're removed unfairly -- after all, if we can't contact you, how will we know it's unfair?

(NINE)
Only the journal you've applied with may be used. Do not use your personal journal, nor any other journal of that character. Your personal journal can, however, be used in the OOC com, but only there.

We do allow exceptions, however: For instance, if you're playing a character who has multiple identities and use a different journal for each identity, we will allow you to use them both if you simply let us know in your app.

(TEN)
The Nexus does, in fact, have its own currency. You can't just get something for nothing, I'm afraid! While many places will accept your native currency, there are banks that will exchange it for you. However, we generally leave it up to the players to decide how much they have. Please refer to the FAQ for more information.

(ELEVEN)
All newly-arrived residents will have access to a free apartment at the Lamont Cranston Apartment Complex. There is no rent, but if you want to move somewhere else more spacious or luxurious, you're more than welcome to. That is defined by the player of the character, including rent.

The Empire

Jan. 4th, 2012 08:04 pm
fandomsmashmods: (Default)
Despite their interest in conquering the Nexus, precious little is known about the Empire. What is known is that they are aggressive and expansionist, their infrastructure and military combining both technology (roughly at the level of the end of the 19th century) and magic. Most of what is known relates to their military technology from equipment either seen or captured during the abortive attack on the Nexus and its inhabitants.

It is known that there was once a collection of groups and small states in the Nexus, until the founder of the Empire - a figure mostly lost to history, and rumoured to still be in charge - arrived. Through means that are still unknown, he established a small, but ruthlessly expanisonistic power. There are rumours that the entire purpose of the expansion was to find something, an object or thing of great power. It may well be that this final objective lays within the borders of the Nexus, and thus their interest...

But hope for the Empire's demise is not yet dead. There is a resistance movement, within its borders, seeking its downfall. The public face of this movement has been Mr.Moto, who has in the past recruited various citizens of the Nexus to carry out missions against the Empire that have damaged its hold over its territory, to a certain limited extent. Moto has not been seen in some time, but for a canny detective, it is probable that he will return...

There is also a dark counterpart - the intelligence agent Sally Lovejoy, constantly trying to undermine the Nexus and either recruit or kidnap people who can be bent to her purpose. It is rumoured that she and her superiors report to someone only known as the 'dark lady' - but who that person is or where she is in the hierarchy of the Empire, or even if the Emperor really lives or is just a long-gone figurehead for someone else - remains murky.

Plot So Far

The Nexus began as just a handful of people, struggling to comprehend how they had arrived there, why they had, and even what the Nexus was. These are questions that have yet to be answered, but that hasn't stopped them from surviving and even thriving.

It began as building permanent shelter, other than crude wooden structures. Buildings have occasionally appeared, much like driftwood washing ashore, but the majority of the Nexus has been build by the sweat and ingenuity of its residents. It started with Lamont Cranston paying for the construction
of a free apartment building for newcomers, but progressed rapidly to the point where, today, there is a small city with a working energy grip. The buildings are of a thousand styles, from a thousand times and places - a reflection of the polygot nature of the residents. There is even
an Academy - frequently damaged and demolished and rebuilt - for the younger members of the community.

Then came the Portal. An engineering marvel made from the combined genius of The Master, Doctor Otto Octavius, and Doctor Drakken, the Portal allowed people to transit back and forth to their home dimensions and times, allowing them access to their lives and events, as well as their resources. It even allowed people to visit other places and times, safely holding their recall devices so they could be pulled back if they needed.

There have been strange parties, villains attempting to defeat their opponents or conquer the city, even Death granting presents as the Hogfather. Many strange things happen in the Nexus. Including the arrival of the threat known as the Empire. While that threat has been at least temporarily contained, it remains a potent presence.

Recently, the Portal was sabotaged and destroyed, and it took the Master a considerable amount of time to rebuild it. It only recently has come back online, but travel between dimensions has opened up again.

And that is the story so far...
fandomsmashmods: (Default)
One day, the mysterious empire struck at the Nexus. The attack came without much warning, and it did so in the form of heavily-armed soldiers. They had aimed to eliminate a potential alternative source of power while it was still young. What they got was a desperate, heroic stand by the residents of the community, one that utterly annihilated the imperial task force.

Part of the defence was led by the handful of soldiers and hastily gathered inhabitants under Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, of U.N.I.T. – The United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. (Doctor Who universe) In the aftermath of the assault, an alliance was struck between the Doctor’s TARDIS (Doctor Who universe) and Death (Discworld universe) – and as a result, a barrier was raised around the large territory of the Nexus – sealing off the Empire on the other side. While individuals could still pass either way, the weapons of the Empire could not.

While this saved the community from another large-scale assault, Lethbridge-Stewart started to heavily recruit both soldiers and a police force, to prevent the Empire from infiltrating extensively and causing havoc within the city itself. The two forces operated independently, but were roughly gathered under the U.N.I.T banner. The U.N.I.T. soldiers strung themselves along the border, and ever since have concentrated on building defences and patrolling the land. The police force still exists, too, though its membership grows or contracts over time.

There is, as yet, no municipal government. The original arrangement of U.N.I.T and the police was meant to be a temporary measure, but has become semi-permanent. Both strive to provide some semblance of order, yet both are faced by immense complications, and it is, as yet, unclear if they can overcome them.
