United Nations Intelligence Taskforce

One day, the mysterious empire struck at the Nexus. The attack came without much warning, and it did so in the form of heavily-armed soldiers. They had aimed to eliminate a potential alternative source of power while it was still young. What they got was a desperate, heroic stand by the residents of the community, one that utterly annihilated the imperial task force.

Part of the defence was led by the handful of soldiers and hastily gathered inhabitants under Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, of U.N.I.T. – The United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. (Doctor Who universe) In the aftermath of the assault, an alliance was struck between the Doctor’s TARDIS (Doctor Who universe) and Death (Discworld universe) – and as a result, a barrier was raised around the large territory of the Nexus – sealing off the Empire on the other side. While individuals could still pass either way, the weapons of the Empire could not.

While this saved the community from another large-scale assault, Lethbridge-Stewart started to heavily recruit both soldiers and a police force, to prevent the Empire from infiltrating extensively and causing havoc within the city itself. The two forces operated independently, but were roughly gathered under the U.N.I.T banner. The U.N.I.T. soldiers strung themselves along the border, and ever since have concentrated on building defences and patrolling the land. The police force still exists, too, though its membership grows or contracts over time.

There is, as yet, no municipal government. The original arrangement of U.N.I.T and the police was meant to be a temporary measure, but has become semi-permanent. Both strive to provide some semblance of order, yet both are faced by immense complications, and it is, as yet, unclear if they can overcome them.
