Name: The Master
Canon: Doctor Who (television)
Canon Point: I have taken the Master from the end of Survival, right after the Cheetah planet blows up. My head canon, since what happens to the Master at this point isn't explicitly stated in canon, is that he was returned to his own TARDIS.
Character Journal: [personal profile] traken_master
Series Info: Doctor Who Wiki

Appearance: Master

Personality:

Like all good characters, villain or otherwise, the Master is a complex person with many layers to his personality. In his role as villain, the Master reveals a very callous nature, often either indifferent to or openly amused by the suffering of others. He can be cold-blooded, killing without remorse. The Master believes that his goals are more important than the well-being of those around him. Anyone standing in his way has, in his eyes, chosen to become a target. The Master is mostly amoral, believing more in cause and effect, than right and wrong. To him, right and wrong are subjective labels that people use to judge each other, based on their own biases.

The Master's lack of morals is, however, not a lack of standards. The Master, except in extreme circumstances, is polite and well-spoken. He is the type of villain who will hold a door for a lady, while on his way to kill someone. His behavior is only rarely coarse or crude. The Master is well versed in the social graces and can be quite likable. He possesses a great deal of charisma.

The tragedy of the Master is that he's a character who possesses a vast potential for good, if it weren't for his corrupt philosophies and goals. The Master also suffers from insanity. He has been tormented by drums, pounding in his mind, since he was eight years old. By the time he steals Tremas's body, his mental condition has deteriorated a great deal. This is sad, since parts of his canon, Yana especially, reveal that the Master is capable of being greatly and genuinely kind, when he is in his right mind. There is part of the Master that yearns for a life of more than just the hunt for power. Part of this is a yearning to be reunited with his estranged friend, the Doctor.

The Master's interactions with the Doctor reveal that, good manners and villainy both aside, the Master has a very playful personality. He enjoys dressing up in disguises, doing so even when it is not necessary. The Master's traps for the Doctor are so overly complicated that they seem more designed to challenge the Doctor, than to harm him. The Master certainly takes a delight in his rivalry with the Doctor, praising him as an intellectual near-equal. Even the Doctor admits that killing him isn't the Master's first priority. He derides the Master's threat to kill him in the Death Zone, saying, "And not humiliate me first? Oh, that isn't your style at all." Despite his lack of morals, the Master does have a personal set of rules that he strays from only reluctantly.

The Master's relationship with the Doctor is very important to the character. They were, at the least, very close friends, while growing up together on Gallifrey and attending the Academy. While their relationship tends to shift, it is always intense, whether they are friends, best enemies, rivals...or lovers. The Master is very much in love with the Doctor, even though he feels compelled, at times, to kill him, knowing the Doctor is really all that stands between him and his goals. The Master is unsure of the Doctor's feelings and this makes him resentful. Still, he can't quite bring himself to kill the Doctor, because, "a cosmos without the Doctor scarcely bears thinking about."

However, the Master is capable of forming other relationships. We learn in Trial of a Time Lord that the Master has a long standing business relationship with Sabalom Glitz. In Logopolis, the Master tries to tie Nyssa to him. He pretends at first to be Tremas and gives her a bracelet so he can control her. At one point, he even threatens to leave and orders her to accompany him. He has more than one romantic alliance with women, Lucy Saxon and Galleia, though he seems to be using them, at least to an extent. Still, the Master is capable of emotional attachment.

Mostly, the Master is a creature of extremes. He both loves and hates very intensely, sometimes feeling both for the same person. He is very energetic and driven. Unfortunately, his emotions are often expressed with acts of villainy or violence. Nevertheless, he is far from a cartoon villain and can be calm, even kind, when it suits him. Far more than a simple psychopath, the Master can be frightening, funny, sincere, and/or deceptive, at any given moment.

Powers/Abilities:

The Master is a genius and a time traveler. He spent over a hundred years in school on Gallifrey, so is very well trained, especially in the sciences. His expertise includes, but is not limited to, mechanical and electrical engineering, cosmology, astronomy, physics, all of the higher mathematics, history, some medicine, especially herbology, geology, and languages.

The Master is an expert at designing and building weapons. He invented his personal weapon of choice, the tissue compression eliminator, or TCE, which shrinks his enemies to the size of dolls. He is also an expert with a sword and more traditional firing weapon, such as pistols and rifles. He also is familiar with some fighting styles, including fencing and jousting. He is physically quite strong.

Most of the Master's real strength, though, lies in his mind. His mental abilities do not end with his education. The Master is a strong telepath and hypnotist. He can, for most people, hypnotize someone simply by speaking to them. He can also, by touching a person, look into their memories or show them something inside his own mind.

The Master is very clever and talented at strategy, coming up with complex plots and often manipulating others to do his dirty work for him. In order to gain trust or hide his true purpose, the Master often hides behind various disguises, though his aliases are usually either an anagram of or word that translates to master.

The Master has most of the physical abilities of a Time Lord. He can see the timelines of people and events around him. He has two hearts, a respiratory bypass system, and vast healing abilities. His senses are all very acute, far more so than a human's. However, the Master has used up all his regenerations. Though, he was able to steal and conver Tremas's body to that of a Time Lord, the Master is on his last life, unless he gets the power to steal another body.

First Person:

[The Master sits at a table in the railway station, carefully constructing the first of the new recall devices. One of his helpers is sitting nearby. The Master chuckles to himself, then shrugs, when the helper gives him an inquiring look.]

Oh, don't mind me. I was just thinking of how sweet victory is. I'm sure some thought the portal was gone for good, but it was only a matter of time. Now, all my plans can be carried forward, both here and at home.

[The helper expresses confusion at how the portal can be used within the Nexus, since it's purpose is to allow travel away from it.]

Oh, I've found a great many uses for the portal, my dear. For one, it helps me in my role as a teacher. Reading about history and important people is all very well, but the best knowledge is always learned first hand! I think I'll take the class to see the formation of the Shadow Proclamation. It might do them good to see how universal some ideas on politics can be.

[The helper expressed doubt about how useful such knowledge can be to human children.]

Oh, come now, not all of my students are human! Even some who are have expressed an interest in other forms of life. I refuse to allow provincial thinking in my classroom. The children must learn that humans are not the pinnacle of life in the universe. There are many other species, with equal, even greater, intelligence. Broadening a student's mind and ability to think is the primary job of a teacher, after all.

[The helper wisely backs down from arguing with the Master, who simply chuckles to himself some more, continuing his work.]

~*Your Character*~

Name: No name ever given. Referred to as "Blondie" by Tuco
Canon: Sergio Leone's Westerns (Fistful of Dollars/A Few Dollars More/The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly)
Canon Point: End of "A Few Dollars More", thus incorporating canon of all three movies.

Series Info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollars_Trilogy

Appearance: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/af/Eastwood_Good_Bad_and_the_Ugly.png

Personality: The Man With No Name is, in essence, the Western archetype. He is ostensibly motivated by money, but that is far from the only thing that matters to him. While his past is never revealed in the films, he displays a strong moral code that definitely puts preference on helping the innocent and powerless against the powerful.

He is more than capable of being cold and precise, and will kill without hesitation when his life or that of his allies is on order. He seems respectful of women, something not universally seen in the period films of the genre. He is also suspicious, which in his universe qualifies more as a 'survival trait' than paranoia.

Primarily, however, his personality seems to be centered around the notion of survival. He's willing, as a result, to kill for money - though he seems to avoid killing the innocent (granted he is never sen to have to make the choice, but his demonstrated choices seem to put him squarely on side with not doing so.)

Powers/Abilities: He possesses no powers per se, but he is an expert shot with any firearm, and is very cunning. This combination of prowess with a weapon and the intelligence to properly apply it is a useful thing indeed.

First Person:

[He struck a match off of his boot, lighting the thin and atrocious cigarette. He tossed the match aside, watching the person across from him carefully.]

I know what you're thinkin'. You're thinkin' you can get to your gun before I do. Well, maybe you're right. But probably not. See, I've dealt with first time gunfighters before. And only once.

[He puffed at the cigarette with his left hand, the right dangling near the pistol at his belt. The poncho was already tossed over his shoulder, out of the way.]

Now you're worth more alive, but not that much more that I ain't willing to drag your carcass back east. So what happens next is up to you, fella. Draw on me and die now, or die later when they stretch your neck for what y'done.

[And then the silence begins. That tense moment of decision. But in his steel blue eyes, there is no sign of worry. No sign of tension. He just watches carefully, and waits. His hand hangs motionless, and ready.]

[When the moment comes, he simply appears to move, an explosion of nerves that jerks the gun out of its holster, and he fires a single shot. Then, slowly, he stands up, looking down at the floor]

Well, that's the choice.

Personality:
Oboro is a very gentle, kind young man, despite his intimidating outward appearance. He doesn't believe in harming anyone unless absolutely necessary, regardless of whether they're an innocent (like a serving maid) or an enemy (like an opposing guard). To him, life is a very sacred thing, and no one should carelessly throw their life away -- nor carelessly take another's. He tends to have somewhat of a low view on people who kill their enemies, though for those not able to simply sneak their way through he says nothing on the matter, understanding they had little other options. This regard, however, does not fall to things that are neither human nor alive -- ghosts, spirits, beasts, and machines are all fair game as far as Oboro is concerned, as their life is either past or they never possessed one in the first place.

His regard stretches into the utmost mercy as well -- if someone is in need and he can do something to help, he often does, such as freeing every prisoner he could find in the castle despite only having come for one specific prisoner. However, he doesn't attempt to babysit those he rescues -- once they're out of their cage or predicament, they're on their own, though he will pause in a moment of quiet if he finds them killed. His willingness to help, however, does not stretch to compromising his mission or his life: if helping another would put him in a state where said life or mission was in danger, he will withhold his assistance as necessary until it is no longer required (one way or the other) or it no longer threatens his life or mission.

Despite being fairly young, Oboro's speech reflects his training in his clan. He is generally very calm spoken and very polite, using proper honorifics to the best of his abilities and kneeling or bowing to those that command such respect. For those who aren't in a higher station than him, he still addresses them politely anyway, though whether this is out of personal preference or some strange habit to "hide" himself is unknown. What is known is that he seems to be very good with people despite his status as a ninja and genuinely seems to enjoy their company when time, orders, or situations allow.

Oboro is very calm in general, never panicking and doing his best to think things through. While does show fear, he doesn't let it restrain him -- rather, he lets it temper him. There is no shame in being afraid, after all, and sometimes fear is your subconscious wisely warning you to be cautious. To be controlled by it, however, is even more foolish not to have it, so he believes and practices that one must take it in stride and harness it the same as any other emotion.

While skilled as a ninja, Oboro doesn't have much luck with domestic tasks, mostly because of said all-inclusive ninja training. While he can care for himself and another in the most base of sense, he has little idea how to tend to children and prefers not to have to. While he will take one under his wing if necessary, rest assured that the first person able to tend to the child will find themselves with it very quickly.

Oboro-maru [Live a Live]

[personal profile] firebird_ninja 2012-01-30 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Powers/Abilities:
As is typical for a ninja, Oboro has had immense training and even as a student shows immense potential -- as such, he has high agility, stamina, and mobility, able to balance on narrow surfaces or roofs, leap from them to the ground without damage to himself, move around unseen, and tiring much slower than a normal person.

Along with this, Oboro is also trained in various types of ninjutsu, able to throw shuriken with near-perfect accuracy as well as tap into his inner "elements" and attack with fire or water (including the ability to turn the ground targeted with said attack into fire or water hazards (in-game referred to as "panels")). He can also scatter poison and access a multitude of other fire/water based elemental skills.

~*Writing Sample*~

First Person:

[It was not that conscious had come slowly to him. No, Oboro-maru had woken in plenty of time, if very much alone when it had happened. It wasn't that he was afraid. No, he was in some place he hadn't recalled ever seeing nor coming to, so he was more cautious and wary than afraid. It was that this place had an odd "sense" about it, a look of a world that he had only heard in talks with Akira and Masaru. He had identified technology they had spoken of in many places here, and for a moment, he had feared one of them had lasped, something had happened to cause another Demon King and warp. But no, that didn't seem to be the case at all. The city, insomuch as he could make his rounds in it without being seen, was surrounded on all edges by an almost endless forest. Everyone in this place went about their business happily and there wasn't a single familiar face in the lot -- not even ones looking confused and out of place.

So, then, what did that make it here? Oboro had no idea.

His attempts to gather information had been weak at best, after all, and with unknown technology like this his wasn't quite willing to push his luck sneaking into houses or buildings. So that left only one other choice and though somewhat foolish, he had little other plans to fall back on.

Which is why there is now a ninja balancing on the top of a bench in the park, arms crossed, eyes closed, and apparently deep in meditation.
